YOUR EFFORTS of petition signatures, calls, letters, and media coverage established a PATTERN of Hingston’s behavior tracing back to 2010 that allowed for a fairer sentencing.

Although we were pushing for a 17.5 - 20 year sentence as recommended by government guidelines and 14 years may seem frustratingly low, there are two other factors to consider as mentioned by Lynn King, the lawyer that kept the community informed on this case:

• The 14 year sentence under government guidelines makes this case difficult to appeal. This means that this sentence is more likely to stick rather than be contested and lowered.
• The 15 year supervised release was not required but still sent down by Judge Wolford. This will further protect our community’s youth if Hingston is ever released and strictly prevents Hingston from ever encountering youth again. Read more directly from Lynn King here.

• Before we intervened, the last judge was considering a 7 year sentence from the defense. Instead, Hingston was sentenced to twice that— 14 years. During sentencing, even the defense lawyer explicitly said that given the evidence presented by our community, Hingston NEEDED a higher sentence— even though he was paid to argue in favor of Hingston!
